This vehicle scrapping policy is the initiatives of a roadmap for replacing old polluting vehicles with technologically advanced and greener ones across the country.

“Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari” on March 18, on vehicle scrapping policy, said more than 20-year-old personal vehicles will be de-registered from June 1, 2024, if they fail in an automated fitness test or their registration certificate is not renewed.

Similarly, for commercial vehicles, 15 year-plus commercial vehicles will be deregistered from April 1, 2023.

According to official estimates currently there are 51 lakh light motor vehicles in the country, which are 20 years plus old and 34 lakh light motor vehicles, which are 15 years old plus. In addition, there are another 17 lakh medium and heavy vehicles, which are 15 years old plus, which don’t have a valid fitness certificate.

Additionally, the government in advance roll out the mandatory obtaining of fitness test certificates for personal vehicles from the automated testing centers in the 10 most polluting cities.

some suggestion from ministry is that relief in GST for buying new vehicles in lieu of scrapping old polluting vehicles and also give some incentive for such buyers.

He also said “I am also issuing an advisory urging to vehicle manufacturers to offer a 5% discount in the price of new vehicles”.

“Nitin Gadkari” also said the turnover from the scrapping industry is expected to be of Rs 7.2 lakh crore and this policy will funnel investments worth Rs 10,000 crore and will create 35,000 jobs.

According to the proposal, the vehicle owner will be free to take the old vehicle to any scrapping centre in the country and he can transfer the scrapping certificate to anyone to avail any incentive for buying a new vehicle.

scrapping centers will have to verify the actual ownership of vehicles before accepting them for scrappage. they can’t scrap stolen vehicles.
